Educational grants

Cyberonics, Inc., is committed to supporting educational endeavors that are consistent with the Company’s mission to advance device-based solutions that improve the lives of people with epilepsy and their families. Cyberonics is also committed to compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, as well as our Business Practice Standards and policies. To view the Cyberonics Business Practice Standards, including the sections related to grants and donations, go to Corporate compliance and select “Business Practice Standards.” The criteria governing the award of Cyberonics’ grants and donations are intended to ensure that support for activities is never tied to the past or future use of our VNS Therapy.

Cyberonics provides educational grants for four general categories of educational activities:

  1. Continuing Medical Education (CME) programs presented by accredited providers
  2. Education programs for healthcare professionals
  3. Patient or community education programs
  4. Disease screening programs

Accredited CME activities are subject to rules issued by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME). ACCME applies standards for commercial support of continuing medical education. Cyberonics adheres to these rules when providing financial support to accredited CME programs.

Examples of financial support that Cyberonics cannot make and prohibited uses of company support are as follows:

  • Grants to support activities that occurred prior to receipt of the grant request packet
  • Grants to support promotional activities
  • Grants to support an event at which the attendees are intended to be only from a single practice group or institution
  • Grants made to, at the request of, or for the benefit of any specific individual, whether a potential or actual medical professional or medical professional-in-training
  • Grants to support an individual practice
  • Grants that are incorrectly categorized as educational grants and would be rejected if properly categorized
  • Grants made, in whole or in part, as an inducement for, conditioned upon, or in any way dependent upon the prescription, purchase, lease, recommendation, use, or implantation of VNS Therapy
  • Travel costs for conference attendees who are not medical professionals-in-training (unless paid by a Conference sponsor)
  • Overhead- or infrastructure-related expenses not directly attributable to an appropriate event
  • Support of a conference where Cyberonics influences or controls the selection of the conference’s attendees, content, faculty, or educational methods and materials
  • Support for conferences where education will be subordinate to entertainment or hospitality
  • Any use of grant funding that is inconsistent with the use approved by Company during the grant request process
